Sustainability/Facilities - Waste Reduction Intern

Position Description: 

The Waste Reduction Intern will oversee compost collections in dorms, breakrooms, and in the dining hall as part of Scripps' ongoing efforts to divert waste from the landfill. The intern will be responsible for compost disposal, campus education, and general management of the on-campus compost system. 

Responsibilities: 

• Facilitate compost pick-ups with our compost service, including checking bins at the dining hall and requesting more when they are full, and checking for contamination 
• Conduct outreach to educate campus on what is and is not compostable
• Work campus events to facilitate appropriate waste disposal to limit contamination 
• Work closely with the Sustainability Coordinator, Dining Management Team, and Student Garden to identify ways to improve waste reduction on campus 
• Empty and maintain food scraps containers in the dorms 
• Empty compost in break rooms, as needed 
• Maintain a log of how much waste is diverted from the landfill 
• Maintain inventory of bins prior to academic breaks 
• Prepare and maintain Greenware & Compost Bin check-out orders, including setting up bins for pick-up and picking up dry Greenware from Malott Commons regularly 
• Support and facilitate Green Office program 
• Support campus-wide waste reduction efforts through composting, recycling, education, and cross-campus collaboration. 

Operational & Administrative 

• Ensure timesheets are submitted on time for approval 
• Attend check-in meetings on a weekly/bi-weekly basis as determined by your Supervisor 
• Maintains accurate records as directed by your Supervisor 
• Meets all administrative deadlines as directed by your Supervisor 
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Must be enrolled at Scripps College and on campus for entirety of the 2026-27 Academic Year 
• Has a strong interest in sustainability 
• Able to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including students, staff, and faculty 
• Passionate about food systems, waste systems, and/or community education 
• Manages time effectively and follows through on commitments 
• Overall willingness to learn 
• Responsive and communicative

Hours: 4-6/wk 

Hourly Rate: $16.90
